Moving Day

Moving

Well, this weekend was our move in weekend to our new downtown apartment. It was kind of amazing to walk into work this morning, and have our ‘commute’ be a total of five minutes 😉

The last few weeks have been filled with packing up our life and putting it into a series of cardboard boxes. I find it amazing just how much stuff we were able to accumulate. We have been living in a two bedroom apartment with no storage for over four years, yet when we were packing, the boxes just continued to multiply!

It was a sad sight when the last of our pantry was packed away, and all that was left was a can of tuna and some salt and pepper for my dinner. No-one ever said that moving was glamourous.

So, Friday morning, the movers arrived and we uprooted ourselves to our new place. It was kind of surreal to see all of our possesions driving away in a truck, while Jamie and I grabbed a bus to our new home. Luckily the Ottawa transit system is pretty reliable, and we actually beat the movers to our new apartment. Thank you OCTranspo!

Seeing all of our items start to pile up in our new home, caused me a bit of stress. We moved from a two bedroom apartment, into a one bedroom. That isn’t what was causing me to panic, it was the kitchen. I lost a pantry and substantial cupboard space. Now, I had been purging my kitchen for a few months now, but even though I thought I had removed lot of items from my possesions, it still wasn’t enough 😦

I am fortunate that Jamie is handy, as he built me a pantry in our new storage room. It is called a storage room in name only, it is really just a kitchen extenstion for the larger kitchen appliances.

Emptying boxes labelled kitchen, I realized that my first pass of kitchen items to get rid of was only the beginning. Does a person really need eight frying pans? The short answer is no, especially when your stove only has four burners. Based on this understanding, I started a donation box to continue to purge as we unpacked. Currently we have filled two additional boxes to be donated and I have given away a lot of my cake decorating supplies (keeping my piping bags and icing tips). There will likely be more before all the boxes have been unpacked.

I am looking forward to being settled into our new home and creating new dinners and desserts to share with all of you. I just have to find those boxes labelled cookbooks…
