This week in Ottawa has been extremely warm; temperatures have been 30°C+ with humidex readings of over 40. Needless to say, turning on the oven in our apartment isn’t really an option. If you can believe it, we fried up some bacon one night, and, as much as I love the smell of bacon, I thought it seemed too heavy in the heat. Therefore, bacon was only on the menu once this week 😦

Spicy Hummus
Now that the weather is nice, it is time to start to think about BBQ’s, picnics and the many types of food that go along with these outdoor events. Fresh vegetables are always a favourite of mine, but sometimes just eating raw vegetables gets a little boring. I find myself scouring the picnic table looking for something to dip my cucumber slice into. Then I see it – Hummus!
Oven Roasted Beet Chips
I love potato chips. It doesn’t matter what flavour they are, I will eat them. I consciously avoid the chip aisle in the grocery store, as my will power is weak when it comes to crunchy, salty snack foods.
We have discovered a brand of root vegetable chips, called Terra Chips. They make their chips, not just with potatoes, but with a variety of root vegetables; parsnips, sweet potatoes, taro and beets. Because they use a variety of vegetables I feel a little less guilty about a weekend indulgence of this salty treat.
Caramelized Onions
I am a bit of a conundrum. When we are out at a restaurant and I order a burger, I always ask for no onions, but then proceed to order a side of onion rings! Weird, right? This brings me to today’s topic, Caramelized Onions. The flavour of the onion transforms right before your eyes when you cook them slowly and add a few extra ingredients to help bring out their natural sweetness.
Chocolate Pumpkin Brownies
I know you are wondering why I am posting another pumpkin recipe. I mean it is spring time, not the fall, however, after whipping up a batch of Pumpkin Maple Muffins; I had to find something else to do with the leftover pumpkin that was sitting in the fridge.
Blondies (do not) have more fun
This post is for my good friend Jeff. When I started the blog he asked me if I would post a recipe that didn’t turn out. Well Jeff, this recipe was a bust!
Let me start off by saying that it is no reflection on the recipe itself. I just seemed to have a hard time following the instructions that were in front of me while I was preparing these Blondies
Basic Pizza Dough
I think that Friday night is the perfect pizza night! (well, actually I could likely eat pizza every day of the week, but Friday’s just seem a bit more right for pizza 🙂 )
If you have the time making your own pizza dough is pretty easy. Plus there are two obvious benefits:
- You know all the ingredients that are going into your pizza
- It is so much cheaper than having one delivered
Squash & Tomato Gratin
You can tell that spring is in the air, as lot of my recent posts seem to be about vegetables. Spring means that the Farmer’s Market will soon be open – Yeah!
When I think of eating a mix of vegetables at dinner, my mind immediately goes to a stir fry. One afternoon I decided to look for a different way to bring a variety of vegetables to the dinner table, in a non-stir fry format. I pulled out some of my cookbooks and started looking at side dish recipes. Nothing was jumping off the page and grabbing my attention.
